The source is situated at a height of 1,100 metres in the hills of Tuscany to the north of Florence. The water rises naturally from the source in the Panna village near the town of Scarperia. Acqua Panna is a lightly mineralised spring water containing no carbon dioxide. Legend has it that the old Romans built the road connecting northern and southern Italy right next to the source so that travellers could always have access to top-quality drinking water. Gravity causes the water to seep naturally from the source at the top to the bottling plant below. All of the employees of this spring water producer come from the small community of Panna. The company has been bottling and trading water on a large scale since 1880.

At the Acqua Panna factory, the spring is constantly protected from undesired accesses and the composition of the water is continually monitored. The area of the spring is fenced off.
